Blog Post #8: Meeting Recap

My individual meeting with Professor Abdoney was productive. First, we addressed my sources and their credibility and usefulness for my topic. I learned that some of my sources, like a New York Times article, are not necessarily credible, so I will need to find additional academic sources to support my stance. Second, we also discussed the fact that academic sources discussing the benefits and positive aspects of Deepfakes may be difficult to find. As a result, it is acceptable to use non-scholarly sources as long as the lack of credible sources is acknowledged in my final project. Finally, we also discussed what data sources I could use for the data visualization portion of my project. Since it is unlikely that data sets on Deepfake usage exist, Professor Abdoney suggested that I create my own by sourcing word frequencies from articles I use.

Based on these discussions, I have identified future steps I can take to further my project. First, I will search a broader range of academic search engines to find 1-2 additional scholarly sources. If I can’t find any, I will simply acknowledge the lack of scholarly sources in my project. Second, I will begin collecting counts of positive use-cases of Deepfakes across my sources to create a data set for visualizations.
